About Hong Kong Rugby Union’s NFT marketplace launch

To celebrate its NFT marketplace launch, Hong Kong Rugby Union is dropping free digital collectibles featuring its flying red dragon mascot, Wai Bei. Interestingly, the mascot “went missing” during the Covid lockdown, eventually making its way into the metaverse. Every fan who logs into the new platform until 3 November will receive a free NFT featuring Wai Bei.

Furthermore, fans attending the Hong Kong 7s tournament can participate in a “Where’s Wai Bei?” treasure hunt. Essentially, they have to search for 5 QR codes hidden throughout the stadium. Each of the codes will unlock more free Wai Bei collectibles. What’s more, those who find all five will be entered to win a VIP tournament experience.

“These first free collectibles and the “Where’s Wai Bei?” game are designed to playfully engage with our fans in novel ways and introduce them to the exciting and innovative digital experiences we’re planning,” said Bryan Rennie, General Manager, Hong Kong Sevens. “Rugby fans are some of the most enthusiastic on the planet…and we aim to harness and reciprocate that energy in web3 community channels.”

Then, during the series, it will auction a game ball and jersey NFTs. More importantly, auction winners will be able to redeem the NFT for the jerseys and ball used during the tournament.
