Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
With all the stories about New York City’s first ever “Rat Czar” I realized that there aren’t very many rats in Second Life. Maybe New York City should have hired a Linden staffer. In an effort to track down Second Life rats, I went to Flickr and found a few pics with rats. For some reason, there aren’t a lot, but they are excellent.
Take “Golden Hair” by Vivena (above), isn’t it extraordinary? I love her use of diagonal lines – the tree, the line of rats, the river. That river water is extraordinary. She used the Singularity viewer and played with depth of field settings. She was dissatisfied with this picture, but I love it.

Cynical Cloud gives us “The Rat Packs – Smart Rats?” which is a nice homage to rats. Rats are smart little critters. They are smart enough to think about thinking, They know what they don’t know or in Donald Rumsfeld’s phrase, “known unknowns.”
Cynical added this cute little description: “I’m still sorting through stuff at the camps coffee shop/chill area and I found these whiteboards (I was gonna use them in the kitchen for shopping lists), and I swear they were blank before, and now I find a very suspicious-looking Rat Pack hanging around, should I worry?”
I like “Ratscals” from Mark- ̗̀ϟ ̖́- Dark. It looks like the rat is squiggling to get down. Anyone with a cat knows that squiggling to get down is a fine art. This is kind of a creepy picture, but not because of the rat. I like the picture a lot, perhaps because of its delight in horror.
Rattus rattus is kind of the Rodney Dangerfield of pets. When I was young, I often stayed over with a friend whose family were small animal farmers. They had goats, sheep, geese, turkeys, ducks, and so on. And pets, a couple ferrets, a raccoon, rabbits, and of course a few rats. They really can be charming, I wish there were a few more rats in Second Life
