As the world is inundated with hype around intangible pictures of apes and cats and every creature in between, Peyote Ugly is a refreshing return to the physical, to the tactile.
The artworks here were each created by hand with a mix of physical materials and digital interventions through in-person collaboration inspired by a physical place, its people, and its history.
Peyote Ugly is a result of a collaboration between four artists from different countries; Poland, Holland, Mexico, and Norway, and was created during their residency at Arthouse Pani, in Tequisquiapan, Mexico.
The artists created a series of artworks inspired by Mexican folk culture and mythology. The narrative they’ve constructed mixes elements of Aztec belief and culture with a humorous modern touch. The tongue-in-cheek storyline depicts the artists in an adventurous saga taking place in the Mexican Jungle where they steal ancient artifacts and go on the run from the wrath of awakened Aztec Gods.
The techniques used here bridge classical artistic practices with emerging digital techniques: from painting, sculpture, printmaking, and etching to their digital counterparts like 3D sculpting, virtual reality, augmented reality, 3D scanning, and photography.
The Peyote Ugly: The Aztec Awakening drop, consists of four single-edition physical artworks with accompanying NFTs and two 20-edition NFTs. Additional airdrops will be raffled and sent to Peyote Ugly holders.
