OpenAI is proactively fortifying its approach towards AI safety, especially with the rapid development of frontier AI models. These state-of-the-art models promise significant advancements, but they also come with heightened risks.
The potential for misuse, especially in the hands of malicious entities, remains a concern, driving the organization to seek robust measures that assess, monitor, and protect against the perils these systems may present.
In light of these concerns, OpenAI is establishing a specialized unit, the Preparedness team, spearheaded by Aleksander Madry. This team’s core objective revolves around capability assessment, evaluation, and predictive “red teaming” for the cutting-edge models in AI’s pipeline. Their scope of vigilance will cover a broad spectrum of potential threats, including:
- Personalized influence tactics,
- Cyber threats,
- Risks pertaining to chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear sectors,
- And the challenges of autonomous replication and adaptability in AI systems.
We are building a new Preparedness team to evaluate, forecast, and protect against the risks of highly-capable AI—from today’s models to AGI.

To streamline these efforts, the Preparedness team is also focused on shaping the Risk-Informed Development Policy (RDP). This policy outlines rigorous strategies for evaluating frontier model capabilities and monitoring them, creating protective measures, and setting a governing framework to oversee the AI development process.
The RDP aims to bolster OpenAI’s current risk mitigation strategies, ensuring both pre-deployment and post-deployment phases of AI systems are in alignment with safety and regulatory standards.
OpenAI believes in collective intelligence and is reaching out to the wider community for insights and expertise. They’ve rolled out the Preparedness Challenge, encouraging enthusiasts and experts alike to share their perspectives and solutions.
Not only does this challenge offer substantial rewards, including API credits worth $25,000 for standout submissions, but it’s also a scouting platform for OpenAI to identify potential team members for the Preparedness initiative. This challenge remains open until December 31, 2023, with the organization keen on integrating novel ideas and methodologies into their safety blueprint.
