No One Cares About Decentralization (Here’s Why That’s a Good Thing)

Remember the Sega Dreamcast?

It was one of the most feature packed consoles of its time.

It had a screen in the controller, internet connectivity (in 1997!), and the graphics card was rumored to be designed by aerospace engineers at Lockheed Martin.

Critics LOVED it! But, somehow, consumers gave it the snub.

Why? Because it had a weak game library.

(What’s the point of having all those features if you can’t do anything with them??)

The story of the Dreamcast shares many parallels with the current state of Web3.

One of the biggest mis-conceptions in the space?

‘Decentralization is a mass market selling point.’ (It’s not).

It might be hard to hear, but…most people don’t care about decentralization.

They care about what they can do with something (not how it’s built).

And don’t get us wrong, decentralization is foundational to Web3 – absolutely. It’s a must have, not a ‘nice to have.’

That said…

We think ‘broad market apathy’ towards decentralization is exactly what Web3 needs in this moment. Why?

But now, much like the Sega Dreamcast – we just need something to do with it all.

And if ‘decentralized protocols’ were the final answer, those things would never get made.

The good news?

Demand for easy to use, consumer friendly Web3 products won’t work in opposition to decentralization – it’ll proliferate it!
