Quick take:
- Blankos Block Party is the flagship title of Mythical Games.
- NFTs in the game represent avatar designs and accessories that can be traded through the game’s marketplace.
- The game has partnered with Burberry, Atari and deadmau5 for limited edition NFT drops.
Mythical Games’ Blankos Block Party has launched on Epic Games Store, making it the first blockchain game to be listed on the gaming marketplace of Fortnite’s creator.
The free-to-play game launched in open beta in December 2020 and was previously available on its website. By June, the game has already amassed more than one million total users.
With its launch on Epic Games Store, Mythical Games hopes that Blankos Block Party will lead to mainstream adoption and exposure to a wider market.
While Blankos Block Party is a blockchain game with NFTs that represent avatar designs and accessories that can be bought and sold on the game’s marketplace, Mythical Games isn’t putting the focus on blockchain aspect of the game but rather on its fun factor and ownership economy.
“We’re not beating our chests and saying this is a Web3 game and this is on the blockchain. We’re unique that way. You don’t need to know what a wallet is. You don’t need to know what cryptocurrency is, you can literally just play it,” Mythical Games CEO John Linden told Games Beat.
Blankos Block Party is set in a colourful virtual world inspired by vinyl toy culture. Players can collect and personalise unique Blankos characters, level them up and sell them on the game’s marketplace.
Since its launch, the game has partnered with Burberry, Atari and deadmau5 for limited edition NFT drops, but players are not required to buy an NFT to start playing the game.
Prior to launching on Epic Games Store, Mythical Games get the game rated by different ratings agencies around the world, including the Entertainment Software Ratings Board in the U.S., per Epic Games’ request. This was to make sure that children are protected in the transaction part of the game. As it offers players the ability to buy and sell in-game items, Blankos Block Party has a Teen rating.
“Epic Games Store will welcome games that make use of blockchain tech provided they follow the relevant laws, disclose their terms, and are age-rated by an appropriate group,” Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney tweeted. “Though Epic’s not using crypto in our games, we welcome innovation in the areas of technology and finance.”
Blankos Block Party on Epic Games Store is now available for download in early access. The full launch will take place on Sep 28, with additional features and content.
Mythical Games is also developing a blockchain video game for NFL. Last November, the company hit unicorn status after raising $150 million in Series C led by a16z, with participation from FTX, Binance, NFL and others.
