Baidu Rolls Out MetaStack the Underlying Tech for Its Metaverse Infrastructure Platform

Baidu is rolling out MetaStack, the underlying technology for its metaverse platform XiRang. The company is building a metaverse infrastructure that will help developers build independent metaverse projects within 40 days, down from the current duration of 6-12 months.

According to the announcement published via the company’s WeChat account, Baidu is targeting January 10 during the company’s annual developers’ conference.

The Chinese internet giant is targeting the rapid influx of mainstream brands and companies into the metaverse.

“The metaverse will not only become a new marketing front but also open up the imagination for new consumption and new production. More and more companies hope to build an independent metaverse with brand characteristics,” Baidu wrote.

Building a metaverse project takes a lot of manpower, complicated technology and financial resources, thus making it a long and tasking process. XiRang aims to ease the process by offering various tools via its metaverse infrastructure including Metaverse client kernel, cross-network transmission service, Metaverse world service engine, and Metaverse operation platform.

Baidu is not the only company targeting metaverse infrastructure as a service in a bid to capitalise on the rapid adoption of 3D internet technology.

In the US, leading graphics processing unit producer Nvidia has launched Omniverse, a service that provides developers with the tools required to build the metaverse. The company revealed at CES 2023 that it is already adding features and upgrades making it a scalable end-end platform capable of handling the growing number of users.

Elsewhere, Meta Platforms last year announced it was close to completing its AI supercomputer, which it believes will power communications in the metaverse. Like Meta, Baidu also emphasises the importance of computing power in building the metaverse.

The “metaverse has almost infinite demand for computing power. The continuous and effective operation of the Metaverse platform and large-scale simultaneous interaction of users depend on the support of cloud computing technology,” the press document announcing the release of MetaStack reads.

Baidu announced the launch of its metaverse infrastructure platform XiRang on January 5, 2022. In June, it launched a suite of Web3 AI infrastructure tools to facilitate brand marketing in the metaverse.

In the statement published Wednesday, the company said its MetaStack launch was meant to take the metaverse beyond brand marketing.
